Just a Few Days Left to Get the Recognition Your Star Nurse Candidate Deserves.
Nursing superstars are in the news today, for so many reasons. That’s why the American Nurses Association and The Washington Post have teamed up on Star Nurses, which recognizes and celebrates truly awesome RNs practicing in Maryland, Virginia and the District.
Every day, nurses go the extra mile, give so much of themselves and really makes a difference to their patients and organizations. Just a few examples in the news recently include:
- Brittney Wilson, BSN, RN, who wrote “The Nerdy Nurse’s Guide to Technology,” which won the 2014 American Journal of Nursing book of the year award. The book guides nurses through proper management of the latest technology involving digital documentation, smartphones, tablets and social media in order to enhance patient care and improve job success. Her “Nerdy Nurse” blog provides fun and informative updates for nurses and is rated the number one Top Nursing Blogs For Students.
- Pediatric home care nurse Gloria Kindzeka, RN, who won an Amazing Nurse award presented by the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future. Her young patient Kate was born with Pfeiffer Syndrome, when bones of the skull fuse prematurely and prevent skull growth, causing an abnormal shape of the face and head. Gloria cared for Kate through nearly 50 medical procedures needed to protect her brain, and helps her with dental care, medications, respiratory treatments, hygiene and therapeutic playtime.
- Jolinda Kelly, a perinatal nurse navigator, started one of the first programs to help families grieving from the loss of a baby. Her mission is to help parents create memories and events of their infant’s loss, such as making 3-D molds of their baby’s feet, so that when they leave the hospital without their child, they will have something to hold onto.
The Star Nurses Campaign is for these kinds of nurses—and we bet you know one or two yourself, don’t you? We need your nominations now.
It’s all about celebrating nurse excellence, and nominations are welcome from peers, patients, family members, or members of the community. Awards will be presented to two nurses from Maryland, two from Virginia and two and the District of Columbia at a live event on the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birthday, May 12, 2020.
Nominations close at midnight on February 22, 2020—so please hurry! Go to this webpage to find criteria, official rules and everything else you need to know.
